Week 28 Update

Today marks the beginning of week 29.  Our little guy can be as long as 17 inches now and weighs about 3 pounds.  Although he is getting pretty close to his birth length (within about 3 inches), he still has a lot of weight to gain.  Within the next 11 weeks, he will double to triple his weight!  Most of this weight will come from the fat that is now accumulating under his skin.  As he plumps up, space in my tummy will become more cramped, and I'll probably stop feeling as many hard kicks and punches, and I'll feel more jabs and pokes from his elbows and knees.

Things on my end are pretty much the same.  I'm surprised at how much energy I still have, and am cautiously waiting for the days where I feel totally wiped out again.  I've been super busy at work these past few weeks though, so I guess I haven't had time to really notice a lot of the little aches and pains that can go along with pregnancy.  As the baby is getting bigger, I'm definitely noticing more frequent trips to the potty (which is particularly annoying at night when I'm trying to sleep!).  Sometimes I can actually feel when he's kicking my bladder!  haha  I've also noticed that my nose, which has been on the stuffy/runny side for the past few months, is getting a bit more stuffy now.  (Fortunately, it's still not as bad as a cold so that I can still breathe pretty comfortably.)

Last week, I took a glucose tolerance test to make sure I haven't developed gestational diabetes.  It wasn't as bad as I thought it would be.  I had to drink about half a liter of this orange flavored sugar drink (which reminded me of the "orange drink" we used to get at school or at McDonald's as kids).  Then, I had to wait an hour before they took my blood to send out to the lab.  I found out today that I passed the test with flying colors, so that's great!  If I didn't, I'd have to take a much longer version of the test, which I heard stinks!  (Not to mention, having to worry about my diet even more than I already do.)

Today Mark and I went to another doctor's appointment for the baby, which at this point are occurring every 2 weeks.  Everything seems pretty good, and I only gained 2 pounds over the past 2 weeks (which is about half the rate of weight gain I had been keeping up with these past few months), so it seems like being a little more conscious about what I eat and hitting up the gym a few times a week is helping!  For the first time since 12 weeks, my blood pressure was a teeny bit high, but it's not something the doctor is worried about at this point since everything else seems good.  I have a feeling that it might have been a little high since I had to give a talk for the Biology department today before the appointment, and I was probably still coming down from being super nervous about that...haha  I guess we'll see how it goes in 2 weeks!

Tonight Mark and I went to the 2nd of 4 birthing basics classes we're signed up for.  This class, the instructor mostly went over the different stages of labor and drug/anesthetic options for during labor.  We also spent a decent amount of time at the end of the class practicing breathing and relaxation exercises.  That was kind of nice, since I left the class feeling totally relaxed!  Next week we get to watch 3 birthing videos (which should be interesting...haha) and get a tour of the hospital.

Well, I guess that's it for now!

-Mandy :)
