Week 12 Update

Week 12 is almost up, and I am officially into my 2nd trimester.  The baby is getting close to 3 inches long, and all of its body and organ systems are up and running (now there is just 6 more months of maturing!).  At this point, its digestive system is staring to make contractions, its bone marrow is making white blood cells, and its pituitary gland at the base of the brain has started producing hormones.

The best landmark being hit though is probably that at the start of the 3rd trimester (weeks 12 and 13), the chance of miscarriage decreases significantly, so that is certainly comforting!  (That's also why we decided to spill the beans to the world about the baby at the end of last week.)

Today, I also received some other very comforting news.  The hospital where I got the 1st trimster screen done called to give me the results of the tests they ran last Wednesday, and everything looks good!  The screen for Down Syndrome and Trisomy 18 came back negative (very low risk).  Based on the screen, for our baby, the chance of Down Syndrome is 1 in 7600 (expected risk in my age group 1 in 710), and the chance of Trisomy 18 is 1 in 10,000 (expected risk in my age group 1 in 2500), both of which the doctor said are very low.  From the way the doctors and technician acted during and after the screen, Mark and I figured everything is okay, but it's certainly nice to hear that the test results say that they are!

Other than that, not too much else to report.  In general, I've been feeling a little better than I have.  (I really haven't had it too bad so far, but still experienced an overall yucky feeling in the mornings.)  Also, I think I have stumbled upon a definite craving of mine:  Greek salad!  Not sure why...haha  But since last Thursday I've eaten about 4 of them.  I guess I can be glad that I'm craving something semi-healthy at least.  (Although, don't get me wrong...  There are plenty of times I still want fries and a cheesesteak!)

That's all for now!

-Mandy :)
